CHP MP Böke responds to Erdoğan’s call: ‘The dollars in shoe boxes should be exchanged first!’

Stating that AKP government has brought Turkey to the ‘edge of an economic crisis and poverty’, CHP’s Deputy Chair Selin Sayek Böke reacted to the call of Erdoğan and AKP officials to people ‘for changing their foreign currency to TL.’

Söke said: “Everyone in Turkey knows that the dollars to be exchanged are in shoe boxes! They should exchange those!”
Giving information about her earlier call on the government officials to stop their policies that lead the country to the ‘edge of an economic crisis’, that halt transparent processes, and that give religious communities privileges, Söke added: “Those who do not have dollars in their pockets might be thinking this has nothing to do with them. Unfortunately, the decline of the value of Turkish lira impacts each of us whether we have dollars or not... In Turkey, today, the political risks that the AKP government brings about through its state of emergency and decrees, along with its insistance on a presidential system, while it also fights with the whole world on the other hand, are making all of us poorer...”

Also referring to President Erdoğan’s most recent remarks where he called on the people of Turkey ‘to take out the dollar bills from under their pillows and exchange it with TL’, Söke said: “You have a palace with 50 rooms constructed and you have spent billions of TL for that. And, you do not even disclose how much exactly was spent on it. Then, you turn to the citizens and have an eye on their cars, which they purchase out of necessity… If being wasteful is the problem, the President and AKP government are the ones who are wasteful. Those who are forced to save while they already earn almost nothing are the citizens. In Turkey, 6.5 million people receive minimum wage – 1300 TL. However, hunger threshold for a 4 member household in Turkey is 1461 TL. What waste are you talking about? On the other hand, the ‘campaign to exchange dollars’ is equally embarrassing. It is a proof that they know nothing about economy… Everyone in Turkey already knows that the dollars to be exchanges are in shoe boxes. So, those should be exchanged!”
