Criminal complaint filed against teacher in Turkey who gave hanging ropes to children to pose in support of death penalty
A post of a teacher İstanbul on his personal social media accounts caused reactions among public yesterday. Head teacher of a second grade class at a public school, Aydın Erekmen had taken a photo with his students where he gave each of them a hanging rope to hold up while taking the picture.
Sharing the photo following the deadly bomb attacks in İstanbul’s Vodafone Arena soccer stadium on Saturday, teacher Erekmen also wrote ‘President! We want justice’,indicating his support for death penalty to be reintroduced in Turkey.
‘Nooses were probably done as a scout activity’
When questioned about the posts and the photo, the school management said ‘they had not actually seen the posts but thought the nooses were probably done as an activity of the ‘scout’, rather than being ‘hanging ropes.’
Assistant Principal of the elementary school said yesterday (December 13): “We’ve been informed about the issue. We’re investigating it. We’ve talked to the teacher. He’s got a scout activitiy for the kids, and, he had said he was doing activities with the scout. So, we think it’s part of a scout activity.
When we, as BirGün, reminded him that the photo had been shared with comments promoting death penalty, the assistant principal replied: “Actually, I have not seen the post. We’re investigating it. And, our principal has just been informed. We’re probing it and we’ll get results. But we’ve just thought of it as a scout activity.”

On the other hand, in another photo shared by Erekmen on his account, a boy who is around 10 years old is holding up a gun. And, it catches the eye that in one of Erekmen’s comments under the picture, he says ‘it is prep-work for the new Turkey’.

In another photo, teacher Erekmen is seen with his students paying a visit to the office of Humanitarian Relief Foundation (İHH), a foundation known for its involvement in Mavi Marmara flotilla and its affinity with AKP government.
Issue has been taken to the parliament
CHP MPs Murak Bakan and Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi took the issue to the parliament. While Bakan said, “Allowing this man to teach is like a murder”, İlgezdi added, “It is yet another source of shame for this country to see children in such photograph.”
Ministry reported Erekmen has been suspended
Talking to BirGün, lawyer Burak Eskici stated that a criminal complaint has been filed against the teacher with accusations of ‘encouraging people to commit crimes and manipulating and damaging the mental health of children.’
Lawyer Eskici gave information on their legal action by writing on his Twitter account: “Necessary legal requests have been done against those who try to poision our future and sacredness of teaching profession.”
Meanwhile, Ministry of Education informed that public that teacher Erekmen has been suspended from his post while the issue is being investigated.
