Students in Turkey in custody over a message of support for educators on hunger strike

A number of college students at Turkey’s Akdeniz University have been taken into custody earlier on Monday (June 12) over a banner that they carried during their graduation ceremony to draw attention to the condition of the two dismissed educators who are on hunger strike.

According to reports, houses of the students were raided by police and their electronic and digital devices were seized.
Among those taken into custody and taken to Antalya province’s Çallı Police Station are executive board members of ÖDP’s (Freedom and Solidarity Party) Antalya Branch, Dilan Esen, and a student of journalism, Selim Can Alabayı.

Their banner read as '93rd day on hunger strike! Freedom to Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça.'

The two dismissed educators, Gülmen and Özakça, who have been on hunger strike for over 3 months by now, were arrested earlier in May.
