Turkey’s educational website Tree of Evolution starts a campaign against ban on evolution theory

Turkey’s popular educational website Tree of Evolution (Evrim Ağacı) has launched a campaign on social media under the hashtag of #MüfredatBiziz - meaning in Turkish ‘we are the curriculum’ - against the government's decision to exclude teaching of Darwin's theory of evolution at schools.

Having been actively publishing scientific articles since 2010, the site was created with the participation of students and graduates of Turkey’s one of the most accredited universities, METU (Middle East Technical University).

The latest campaign of the group running the site was started as a reaction to the government’s latest revision on the curricula of secondary and tertiary schools, which removed the theory of evolution.

Officials of ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have defended their decision to remove it by asserting that ‘middle and high school aged students could not understand it’. Some officials openly put forth a religious argument.

The education ministry, on the other hand, is working on adding chapters on ‘jihad’ in courses of mandatory religion education for students as young as 9-10 year old.
