Holding their strike despite a ban, Turkey’s metalworkers get their demands met

Last week, 2200 metalworkers who are members of Birleşik Metal-İş (United Metalworkers’ Union of Turkey) had started a strike to demand from their employer their collective bargaining rights to be met.

While the Council of Ministers issued a ban on the strike claiming it was ‘detrimental to national security’, the workers announced yesterday that they did not recognize the ban of the government and continued on their strike.

Meanwhile, workers’ struggle received support from various institutions including other workers’ unions, civil society groups, and scholars from Turkey, as well as, with its 50 million members world-wide the global union IndustriALL.

In a recent announcement made by Birleşik Metal-İş, it is stated that with an invitation of Turkey’s Labor and Social Security Ministry sent both to Birleşik Metal-İş union and EMİS (the union representing the employers) in the late evening hours yesterday (January 23), the two sides met and came down to an agreement approved by the workers.
