Attacker of 23 year old woman arrested again

Man who attacked a woman in public bus for having worn shorts was released earlier last week after the first hearing of the case. While the victim Ayşegül Terzi had a breakdown at the court when heard of the decision of the judge for him to be released, public reaction against it was also reflected on comments of people shared on social media.

Accepting the objection of the chief prosecutor’s office against the decision, Heavy Penal Court on Duty revoked the decision and issued a warrant of arrest for attacker Abdullah Çakıroğlu.

As police caught Çakıroğlu following the order of the court, he was brought in front of the court earlier this morning at İstanbul’s Anatolia Courthouse in Kartal. Çakıroğlu is currently held in custody.

Answering questions of Işıl Cinmen from Posta newspaper prior to the latest decision of the court, 23 year old nurse Ayşegül Terzi had said: “I cannot leave my house; even if I do, I go with my father. I feel jailed! But that man is out on the street. I don’t believe that he has got a mental disorder. If he does, he needs to be in the hospital. But if his mental state is fine, his place is in the jail!.. The prime minister had said that he does not approve of the man kicking me but he also said that the attacker ‘could have just mumbled’ about his thoughts. What was he supposed to tell me by mumbling?... And, the worst comment about it came from a woman on social media, unfortunately. She said to me: “I wish, he had raped you on that bus.” How and why would a woman wish for another woman such thing? …The attacker made his defense in reference to being a Muslim. I’m a Muslim, too. Our religion cannot be used as a tool for such things.”
