Erdoğan criticizes the Lausanne Treaty of 1923

In his speech at today’s (September 29) 27th Meeting of Village Headmen, President Erdoğan criticized the Treaty of Lausanne of 1923 by saying: “In 1920, they showed us the Treaty of Sevres; then, they convinced us to accept the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. And, we ended up giving the islands – which are so close to our lands that you can just shout and be heard – to the Greek. Is this victory?”

However, in his message released on the anniversary of the signing of the Lausanne Treaty (July 24), President Erdoğan had defined the same treaty as the ‘inscrpiton of victory.’

Parts of that message included the following remarks of Erdoğan: “… Today is the 93rd anniversary of the signing of the Lausanne Peace Treaty, which is the document of our Republic’s establishment. The victory, which was won through our glorious nation’s faith, courage, and sacrifice, was inscribed in the fields of diplomacy and international law through the Lausanne Treaty. This treaty stands as a title deed for our new state. The content of the Treaty, in other sense, the value of the fundamental principles of the Republic of Turkey – especially the principles of national will and democracy – has been understood much better nowadays.”
