Families of young people killed in Gezi go on hunger strike to support dismissed workers of Turkey
Families of young people killed or injured by police officers during the Gezi protests of 2013 in Turkey have announced their decision to go on a hunger strike for a week to show support for and be in solidarity with the dismissed academics Nuriey Gülmen and Semih Özakça, as well as, all other unlawfully dismissed people in the country.
In the statement given by the members of the Platform for Martyrs and Veterans of Gezi, it was said: “To be a voice for the hunger of Nuriye and Semih and to be in solidarity with all workers whose jobs have been taken away, we are going to start our hunger strike tomorrow, on May 21st.”
Mothers of Berkin Elvan, Ali İsmail Korkmaz, Ahmet Atakan, and Ethem Sarısülük had gone on a one day hunger strike last week on Mother’s Day to express their support for Gülmen, Özakça, and all victims of emergency decrees in the country, which left hundreds of thousands of people jobless.
