Far-right nationalist group in Turkey's Düzce reacts against Rabia sign

A statue of the Rabia sign placed at an intersection in downtown by the municipality of Turkey’s northwestern province of Düzce was covered up by a flag of far-right nationalist Gray Wolves group.

The group of nationalists that walked to the site of the statue chanting slogans such as ‘the symbol of Turks is the Gray Wolf’ hung a large flag of their movement on the Rabia statue.

Giving a press statement on behalf of his group, Fatih Gülaçtı, the head of the local branch of the organization, said the current government is ‘trying to impose the Rabia sign on the national culture’.

Referring to the inclusion of the Rabia sign by Turkey's ruling party AKP in its bylaws and the attribution of a 'modified meaning' - one homeland, one state, one flag, one nation - given to the 4 fingers, Gülaçtı continued: “We are not against the concept of one state, one flag, on nation, and one homeland. This is indeed something that we, as Ülkücüler (nationalists of Turkey), have been asserting all along. We also add on top of this the ideal of ‘one language.’ But what we are against the imposition of the Rabia sign of the Muslim Brothers in Egypt on our nation as a national symbol.”

The group demanded from the municipality to remove the statue from the site and replace it with either a Gray Wolf or a double-headed eagle, which the group sees as the symbol of Turks.

Deeming the move of the municipality as an attempt to cause political polarization among the locals in Düzce, the branch head Gülaçtı said the municipality should not be using any political symbols, ‘be it the three crescent of MHP or the six arrows of CHP.’
