KRG responds to reactions over their decision to hold a referendum on independence

Talking to reporters after the recent meeting of KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) held at the party’s office in Salahaddin town of Erbil, Prime Minister of KRG, Nechirvan Barzani, commented on the reactions of some states to the upcoming referendum on independence of Kurdistan and said it is ‘normal’ and do not create a concern for Erbil.

President of Iraqi Kurdistan, Masoud Barzani, had also said the people of Kurdistan can ‘decide for their own fate.’

Saying their ‘aim is to tell the world what the Kurdish people want’, PM Barzani ‘congratulated the people of Kurdistan’ and called on them to cast their votes on September 25th in order ‘to determine their own fate.’

Leaders of Iraq, Iran, and Turkey have expressed concern over decision of the KRG to hold a referendum on independence as they desire ‘unity in Iraq.’

Giving statements to a state-run TV on Friday (June 9), spokesperson of Iraqi PM, Saad al-Hadithi said ‘the constitution of Iraq must be taken into consideration when any decision is being made regarding the future of the country.’

Spokesperson of Iran’s foreign minsitry, Bahram Qassemi, also commented on the decision of KRG on Saturday and said ‘the differences between Erbil and Baghdad should be solve through dialogue.’

Reactiong to it more strongly, Turkey’s Prime Minister defined the decision of KRG to hold a referendum on independence as ‘irresponsible’, while the foreign ministry said it was a ‘grave mistake.’
