Letter of MHP MP to all MPs in Turkey: ‘What’s proposed is a dictatorship regime’

MHP’s Isparta MP Nuri Okutan distributed a letter to all MPs at Turkey’s Grand National Assembly. In his letter, MP Okutan opposed to the proposed presidential system and made a warning that ‘it was actually a proposal for a dictatorship regime.’

Drawing attention to proposed terms where power of the legislative branch is weakened significantly and all authority is consolidated under the President, MP Okutan said ‘the parliament and the prime ministry had to be strengthened instead of the executive branch’ and added: “This is a dictatorship regime… We cannot correct a mistake (1982 Constitution) by making another mistake. In the name of correcting the flaws of the 1982 Constitution, our system is about the be dragged down into an irreversable situation...”

Letter of MP Okutan is the most recent indication of a major disagreement among the members of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), whose chair Bahçeli announced his full support for AKP’s proposed constitutional changes, although he had initially stood against the presidential system.

Deputy chair of MHP also resigned over this particular disagreement recently.
