Main opposition MP in Turkey protests AKP’s silencing of all dissenting voices

During the ongoing debates held in Turkey’s Parliament over the government’s proposed changes in the by-laws of the parliament, main opposition CHP’s MP Özgür Özel protested the silencing of the opposition by government authorities.

Before giving statements, Özel covered the platform with a black cloth as a symbol of the authorities’ approach to voices in dissent.

Turkey has been put through a severe crackdown by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) since the failed coup attempt of last summer.

A state of emergency which has been extended four times since July 2016 has been used by the Council of Ministers under the leadership of President Erdoğan as a means to oppress and silence virtually any opposition or criticism.
