New emergency decrees are on the way, says Turkey's deputy PM

Turkey’s Deputy PM Nurettin Canikli said in a recent statement that ‘there are new emergency decrees on the way’, though the content of the decrees could not be announced yet.

Since the declaration of state of emergency in Turkey last summer in the aftermath of the failed coup attempt, extended power has been assigned to the Council of Ministers and the President, avoiding a great deal of parliamentary functioning in lawmaking processes.

Extended twice since its initial declaration, the state of emergency law itself has been asserted by many as in violation of the constitution since its impact has exceeded the scope of its initial purpose.

Under emergency decrees, hundreds of thousands of people – teachers, academics, health professionals, and more - have been either suspended or dismissed from their posts; and, thousands of organizations have been shut down, including hundreds of media outlets.
