‘People shouldn’t remain silent in the face of injustices in Turkey’, says journalist Güven after his release

Journalist Oğuz Güven, the web editor of Turkey’s opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet who was taken into custody over a headline, said people of Turkey ‘should not remain silent in the face of injustice, unlawfulness, and orders of hitmen’.

Güven was released on June 14th after having been held in detention for over a month on charges of ‘terror propaganda.’ His trial will continue without arrest and the next hearing of the case will be held on September 14th.

Talking to Güvin Çamur of BirGün newspaper after his release, Güven said: “I am released and back at my work.”

Emphasizing that he will continue on his fight for freedom and justice, Güven wished for his release to stand as a precedent for cases of his collegues all other people jailed under same circumstances as him.

Güven was relased on the same day when MP of main opposition party, Enis Berberoğlu, was arrested over charges in the MİT trucks case.

Saying he was ‘already feeling partly happy and in a way embarrased’ because he was released while his friends remianed in detention, Güven mentioned that arrest of MP Berberoğlu then took away that slight feeling of joy, as well.
