Reports about plan of Turkey to withdraw troops from Cyprus are not true, says foreign ministry official

In a recent statement, spokesperson of Turkey’s foreign ministry, Hüseyin Müftüoğlu, said ‘reports about plans for Turkey to withdraw troops from Cyprus are not true’.

On Wednesday (June 28), talks on reunification of the island were launched in Switzerland between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders of the island. Greece, Turkey, and Britain are the guarantor states of the talks, which are aimed to find grounds for the island to be reunited after over 40 years of separation.

While the most pressing issues surrounding the stage reached in talks so far is the demand of Turkish Cypriots to have a rotating presidency and the demand of the Greek Cypriots for Turkey to withdraw all of its troops from the island, Turkey announced that reports that have recently been spread about a plan for it to withdraw its troops were ‘not true’.
