Students of İzmir Fen Lisesi (Science High School of İzmir) held a sit-in today at 9:00 in the morning in order to draw attention to the appointments of their teachers who have been working at the school for over 8 years to other institutions.

Students of İzmir Science High School protest against their teachers’ mandatory appointment

14 teachers at İzmir’s Science High School, which is one of the three most successful education institutions in the province with a status of a ‘pilot school’, will be appointed to other schools with the reason of their duty at the same school exceeding 8 years. Similarly, 58 teachers from Bornova Anatolian High School and 30 from Cihat Kora Anatolian High School will also be appointed based on the same reason.

The reports about the recent appointments, which were released after the schools opened, caused unease among both teachers and students, as well as, the parents. Students and parents have been trying to have their voices hears since last week, through their demonstrations.

Defending the view that the cultural make-up of their school would be impacted negatively with the appointment of their teachers to other schools, nearly 200 students from İzmir’s Science High School held a sit-in in front of their school building this morning (September 26). Students held signs that read ‘Don’t touch my teacher!’ and ‘İzmir Science High School is ours, and, it will remain ours!’.
