Turkey's interior minister accuses supporters of jailed educators with 'support to terror'

Turkey’s Interior Minister reacted against release of a joint statement which called for the authorities to have jailed educators Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça returned to their jobs.

The statement signed by 111 people, including several prominent authors, actors and actresses, scholars, and artists from Turkey, was published on Turkey’s Hürriyet, Cumhuriyet, BirGün, and Evrensel newspapers on the 111th day of the two educators’ hunger strike, which they started as a demonstration to demand their jobs back.

Claiming Gülmen and Özakça are members of a terrorist organization, interior minister Süleyman Soylu said in his Twitter message, “Those who completely abide by the orders of the DHKP-C terrorist organization and publish a statement for the members of this organization by twisting the truth: you do not trust the intelligence and findings of the police, from whom you demand help in any small incident. But you have full trust in the members of the terrorist organization! Those who take a step to make the state – the state belonging to all of you – immobile and ineffective against the terrorist organization: are you aware of what you’ve given your signature for?”
