Turkey’s main opposition party takes rigged referendum to ECHR

Having got a rejection from both Turkey’s Supreme Election Board (SEC) and Council of State (Danıştay) for its request for the referendum to be annulled in the face of clear unlawfulness, main opposition party CHP (Republican People’s Party) has taken the issue to European Court of Human Rights.

CHP’s deputy chair and spokesperson Selin Sayek Böke had announced their decision to appeal the issue earlier this week by saying: “We are faced with illegitimate results that came after an ‘unstamped’ referendum. We are going to protect rights of all of our citizens. So, we are going to refer the issue to the ECHR...”

Also commenting on the decision, CHP’s deputy chair Öztürk Yılmaz mentioned why they did not take it to the country’s Consitutional Court and said: “Our supreme constitutional court has turned into a puppet.”

Earlier this morning (April 28), CHP’s MP from İzmir, Musa Çam, announced that he has individually submitted a complaint with the ECHR.

In his remarks, Çam said: “We have gone through an unlawful and dubious referendum. It is a matter where rights of 49% of the people of the country are violated.”
