Turkey's opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet's chief editor of digital publications in custody

Chief Editor of Cumhuriyet newspaper’s digital publications, Oğuz Güven, was taken into custody at early hours of Friday morning (May 12).

Güven posted a message on his personal twitter account at around 7 a.m. stating that he was being taking into custody. The reason has not been reported yet.

12 journalists and media professionals from Turkey’s Cumhuriyet newspaper have been detained for more than 6 months over accusations of ‘supporting both FETÖ and PKK’.

In a 436 pages long indictment completed last month, prosecutors sought up to 43 years of jail time for the detained journalists and members of the newspaper’s executive board.

Cumhuriyet is one of the few remaining opposition newspapers in the country.
