Turkey sees EU Parliament's decision to suspend talks as void

Following the European Parliament’s approval of a resolution asking for Turkey’s EU accession talks to be suspended on Thursday (July 6), first reaction from Turkey came from the Minister of EU Relations, Ömer Çelik.

Asserting that the ‘report of the European Parliament is ‘nonbinding and also non-existing from Turkey’s perspective’, Minister Çelik said: “We call on the European Parliament to respect the people’s will”, referring to the European countries’ criticism of the constitutional changes enacted through the April 16 referendum.

“When we receive the report, we will give it back (to the European Parliament) without even opening up its cover page”, the minister said.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hüseyin Müftüoğlu, also criticized the decision approved and said: “It is obvious that the decision at stake, which is understood to have been prepared in a way that is biased and far from being objective and prepared to serve for certain groups, will not have any positive impact on our relaitons”.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım stated: “This decision is null and insignificant. EU should determine its own vision”.
