625 more members of Turkey’s MHP resign as expelled members decide to form a new party
The shattering within the Turkey’s far-right nationalist MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) took on even a greater pace as the party’s current leader, Devlet Bahçeli, had a change of position towards the ruling AKP (Justice and Development Party) after the failed coup of last year.
Several prominent members were either expelled or they were forced to resign in mass due to conflicts of interest and views with the leading group in the party.
As it has been publicly announced that a new political party that is to be ‘neither right, nor left’ will be formed under the leadership of expelled member Meral Akşener in early fall of 2017, further mass resignations took place in MHP.
Most recently, 410 members of the party’s Kocaeli province and 215 from Bursa have announced their decision to resign in order to join the new party of Ms. Akşener.
The new party to be formed is defined by its prospective leaders as a party that will ‘go back to the roots of the founding principles of Republic of Turkey and also provide a political spectrum for all views and colors’.
