CHP: 'AKP is the greatest threat in Turkey'

BirGün/Ankara

Republican People’s Party (CHP) of Turkey met in an emergency meeting over the past weekend in response to the recent operations on Cumhuriyet newspaper and HDP. In the statement released after the meeting, the Presidential Palace and AKP officials were defined as ‘the greatest threat to the country’s democracy and future’ and ‘people’s right to resist’ against such threat was emphasized. In conclusion, CHP called on ‘all citizens of Turkey who love their country, believe in democracy, and defend fundamental rights and freedoms to unit in order to eliminate that threat.’

In the statement, CHP also demanded for the ‘unlawful case on Cumhuriyet’ to be dropped immediately and for all oppressive approaches and practices against free media to be stopped.

Touching on the FETÖ operations under state of emergency, CHP officials also included in their statement the following: “All military, political, and bureaucratic factions that took part and/or supported the coup attempt must be brought before the court and tried fairly under rule of law. On the other hand, all of our citizens who have been arrested, suspended, or dismissed under state of emergency must be granted their right to fair trial. All who act in violation of human rights and who give legitimacy to such violations must be brought to justice.”

Drawing attention to ‘attacks and threats against the youth, women, laborers, civil society institutions, and virtually people of every corner of life’, CHP called on the ruling party to ‘end its authoritarian’ regulations and oppression over the people.

In regards to the detention of HDP co-chairs and MPs, which was one of the main reasons for holding the emergency meeting, CHP included the following remarks in its statement: “Although it had to carry out the resolution process (of the Kurdish question) at the Parliamentary level with the elected representatives, the AKP government looked over the Grand National Assembly and went into a bargaining process directly with PKK. And, the terror and violence that our country has now been faced with is the living proof of how wrong was its method of ignoring the Parliament. Repeating the same mistake today, AKP is actually serving for the terrorists’ goals by getting the MPs in the Parliament arrested. Arresting the MPs before the legal procedures are completed and a decision is made against the Constitution and the judicial processes. This unlawful practice must be ended immediately.”

CHP members also expressed their ‘readiness for fulfilling the obligations for ensuring elimination of all threats posed by AKP’s authoritarian regime’ and vowed that those leading the country to an ‘edge of a cliff’ would be tried before law.
Statement was concluded with the following: “Neither coup nor dictatorships…Long live democracy! The Republic of Turkey will always advance. We are not going to allow for Turkey to be partitioned; we are going to let the Republic founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk live ‘till the end.”
