Die Welt's Turkey correspondent arrested in İstanbul
Journalist Deniz Yücel, Turkey correspondent for Die Welt, was taken to prosecutor’s office at İstanbul’s Çağlayan courthouse earlier today (February 27)
Yücel had been taken into custody in İstanbul on February 14th after reporting himself to the police department in response to a warrant of arrest issued against him.
He is among nine journalists – including BirGün team member Mahir Kanaat - who have faced legal action in Turkey for having reported on e-mail correspondences leaked by leftist hacker group RedHack and claimed to be belonging to Turkey’s current energy minister and President Erdoğan’s son-in-law Berat Albayrak.
CHP MP Barış Yarkadaş announced from his personal twitter account that the court decided for Yücel to be arrested on accusations of ‘being a member of a terrorist organization’ and doing ‘terror propaganda.’
