First statement from AKP regarding recent internet outage in certain cities

The first official statement with regards to blocking of internet in the eastern and southeastern provinces following the detention of Diyarbakır municipality heads Gültan Kışanak and Fırat Anlı came from Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş yesterday (October 27).

As a journalist asked him whether the current blockage on internet experienced throughout the eastern and southeastern region was related to the detention of Kışanak and Anlı or not, Deputy PM Kurtulmuş claimed that the blockage was not related to the latest developments.

Arguing that ‘there are always provocations on social media’, Kurtulmuş added: “Social media is not a place to act irresponsibly. Everyone must act very carefully there. What is important for us now is establishment of amity and unity in Turkey at a point in time when Middle East is in such chaotic atmosphere. We might have difference of political views but we are all children of this country. And, those using the social media can never make certain provocations through seperative rhetoric. They shouldn’t!”
