New-year messages from leaders of Turkey’s political parties
Turkey’s PM and AKP’s chair Binali Yıldırım, CHP chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, MHP chair Devlet Bahçeli, and HDP’s detained co-chairs Figen Yüksekdağ and Selahattin Demirtaş have shared their new year messages with public.
PM Yıldırım: ‘We are going eliminate terror by magnifying our president’s leadership…’
In a written statement, PM Yıldırım gave emphasis to ‘fight against terrorism’ and said: “We are going to eliminate terror by magnifying our president’s leadership, our opposition parties’ cooperation, and our people’s solidarity.”
Also pointing out to constitutional amendments, PM Yıldırım said: “With the changes in our Constitution, our country and democracy will become even stronger. In the new year, we are going to protect the stability of democracy, the rule of law, and the security of our country by all means. We are not going to stay away from anything even for a moment in terms of protecting our borders.”
CHP chair Kılıçdaroğlu: ‘Each new year is a brand new start...’
Message from chair of main opposition party CHP Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu included the following statements: “We have come to the end of the year 2016 through difficult times we experienced in regards to democracy, law, economy, education, national security, and foreign policy. However, we know and believe that each new year is a brand new start where hopes are refreshed... We have a history in which people had shown that what was deemed ‘impossible’ could be made possible... We are going to continue walking on the path of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk... We are going to give efforts all together for democracy, rule of law, freedom, and equality... With these thoughts and emotions, I wish all of our citizens a happy new year and, starting with our martyred security forces, I commemorate all of our citizens who lost their lives in 2016... I wish for 2017 to bring peace and serenity to our country, region, and all over the world.”
MHP chair Bahçeli: ‘We are going to keep defending our national rights...’
Statement of MHP chair Bahçeli for the new year includes the following message: “2017 must be the year for Turkey to shake up and stand up again. My wish is of course firstly this. Everyone must know very well that we are going to keep defending our national rights and interests without a fear by taking up our side in the face of those who plan and want us to be partitioned.”
HDP co-chairs: ‘We wish people of all backgrounds a hopeful new year where life is celebrated…’
Releasing their new-year message from prison, detained co-chairs of HDP, Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, said the following: “We wish 2017 to be a year full of hope where people of all backgrounds – people with different beliefs; the laborers; the oppressed; women; youth; and, the retired – would have health, success, and societal prosperity. Wishing for a peaceful and serene new year where we are going to be able to celebrate life, we greet all of you with respect and love.”
