Police in Turkey continue blockade in Yüksel Street of Ankara’s city center
The demonstration of Turkey’s dismissed academics and public employees from other fields was on its 223rd day today (June 19).
While dismissed educators Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça - who have been on a hunger strike for more than 100 days - still remain in detention, their friends, family members, activists, and people victimized by the government’s unlawful purge in response to the failed coup attempt have been consistently coming to the demonstration site in front of the Human Rights Statue on Yüksel Street of Ankara’s city center, Kızılay.
People who gathered at the site again today (June 19) to read a press statement to repeat their demands were attacked by police with tear gas.
The chief yelled at the demonstrators, saying ‘nobody will enter Yüksel Street’.
As other officers gave a warning, saying ‘we will intervene if you do not disperse’, dismissed teacher Acun Karadağ reacted and said to the officers: ‘It is not an intervention; just say they you will attack.’
